SELECTING A MARINE ALTERNATOR
WHEN YOUR ALTERNATOR ON YOUR BOAT GOES OUT, THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING A DISCOUNT OR JUST AN AFTERMARKET ALTERNATOR.
THE FIRST THING IS YOU SHOULD KNOW IS IF YOUR OLD ALTERNATOR IS A ONE WIRE OR A THREE WIRE SETUP. THE ONE WIRE SYSTEM HAS A LARGE OUTPUT WIRE AND A SMALL GROUND BLACK WIRE AND THE BLACK WIRE OR GROUND IS NOT COUNTED. THE THREE WIRE ALTERNATORS HAVE TWO SMALL EXTRA WIRES, THE RED SENSES IF THE ALTERNATOR SHOULD CHARGE HARD OR EASY, THE DARKER (PURPLE OR BLACK) COMES FROM THE KEY AND WHEN THE MOTOR GOES OFF THE FIELDS IN THE UNIT ARE TURNED OFF.
OLDER MERCRUISER ENGINES USED EITHER DELCO, AUTOLITE, PRESTOLITE, OR MOROROLA ALTERNATORS, THEY WERE INTER- CHANGEABLE. AND PURCHASED BY MERCRUISER ON A CHEAPEST AVAILABLE BASIS. ALL OF THE COMPANIES LISTED ARE GONE EXCEPT DELCO AND A NEW SOURCE CALLED MANDO.
IF YOUR OLD ALTERNATOR HAS A VOLTAGE REGULATOR BOLTED ON THE REAR OF THE CASE, YOU SHOULD BUY A MANDO BRAND, IF YOUR OLD ALTERNATOR HAS A FLAT SCREENED REAR YOU SHOULD REPLACE IT WITH A DELCO.
DELCO ALTERNATORS ARE ALL IN THE LOW 60 AMPS SIZE THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS NUMBER OF WIRES. MANDO COMES IN ONLY THREE WIRE SETUP BUT IN 55 OR 65 AMPS.
SOME OF THESE ALTERNATORS COME WITH SERPENTINE BELTS INSTEAD OF V BELTS.
MOST ALTERNATORS COME WITH A 2" NUB ON THE SIDE WHICH FITS BETWEEN TWO TABS EXTENDING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AND THRU BOLTED FOR A PIVOT, HOWEVER SOME SETUPS LIKE O.M.C. OR DIESEL THIS IS REVERSED AND THE NUB IS ON THE ENGINE AND THE TWO TABS ON THE ALTERNATOR. IF YOUR ALTERNATOR IS REVERSE MOUNTED LIKE THIS, YOU MUST MENTION THIS FACT WHEN ORDERING OR A MISTAKE WILL BE MADE.
